The kingdom's souls have been stolen, Princess Prin-Prin's among them, and Sir Arthur is the only knight left to get them back. What follows is Capcom's arcade sequel to Ghosts 'n Goblins at its most gorgeous and most merciless, and the Genesis conversion brought it home in 1989 with startling faithfulness. It was programmed by Yuji Naka, two years before Sonic the Hedgehog made him famous.
Arthur still loses his armor to a single hit, leaving him to fight on in his boxer shorts, and a second hit still sends him back to the last checkpoint. The big change from the original is freedom of aim: Arthur can now fire straight up, and straight down while in midair, which transforms how you deal with the flying demons and towering monsters that fill each stage. Jump in the right spot and a treasure chest bursts from the ground, holding a new weapon, the prized golden armor, or a mischievous magician who turns Arthur into a doddering old man or a helpless duck. Golden armor is the prize worth chasing, letting you charge your weapon for a powerful magic attack, with each weapon carrying its own spell.
Then comes the famous twist. Beat the first five stages and the game sends you back to the start to do it all again, this time with a special weapon appearing along the way. Only with that weapon equipped, and Beelzebub defeated, can Arthur enter the final chamber and face the demon king, renamed Loki in the Genesis's English release. It is brutal, and it is exactly why clearing it means something.
Its reputation is secure. The Genesis version swept Electronic Gaming Monthly's 1989 awards, including Best Game of the Year, Best Graphics, Best Sequel and Coolest Boss, and EGM later ranked it among the greatest console games ever made for how closely it recreated the arcade. This is the cartridge that showed early Genesis owners their new console could bring a top Capcom coin-op home, and a punishing, beautiful platformer that still rewards every life you pour into it.
