One bullet can end a mission in Ghost Recon, and that single fact changes everything about how you play it. Red Storm Entertainment, the studio co-founded by Tom Clancy and already known for Rainbow Six, built a squad shooter where charging across open ground is a quick way to lose a soldier for good. Victory comes from scouting, patience and positioning, and every firefight feels tense because nobody on either side can soak up punishment.

The year is 2008. Russia's government has collapsed, a hardline leader is pushing to take back the former Soviet republics, and the Ghosts, an elite U.S. Army Special Forces unit, are sent in. You lead two fireteams, Alpha and Bravo, setting their movements and switching between soldiers as the situation demands, while a threat indicator warns where unseen enemies are lurking. Soldiers who survive carry their experience forward and improve between missions, which makes every loss sting, and completing bonus objectives brings specialist operatives into your roster. The equipment draws on the U.S. Army's real-world Land Warrior program, giving the game a near-future but grounded edge.

On the original Xbox, Ghost Recon brought PC-style tactical depth to the couch and became a cornerstone of the console's early online scene, with cooperative and competitive play built around Xbox Live, a service long since retired. Its success led straight to Island Thunder, Ghost Recon 2 and Advanced Warfighter, and the series is still going today.

This is the Platinum Hits release, Microsoft's budget reissue line for the Xbox's best-selling games, and its existence says plenty about how many players this game reached. It is a crisp piece of Xbox history and the first chapter of the Ghost Recon story.
