Item Description

Swipe the touchpad and the wind picks up, bending the tall grass toward your next destination. Ghost of Tsushima replaces the usual waypoint clutter with the Guiding Wind, and that one idea sums up Sucker Punch Productions' approach: a sweeping samurai epic designed to keep your eyes on the world instead of the HUD. Set during the Mongol invasion of Tsushima in 1274, it follows Jin Sakai, one of the few samurai left standing after the disastrous battle at Komoda Beach, as he fights to free his island home from Khotun Khan's forces.

Swordplay is the heart of it. Jin swaps between stances, each built to break a different enemy type, and standoffs let him face down a group before a fight begins, with a single clean strike deciding the first exchange. As the story goes on, he embraces stealth tactics his uncle, Lord Shimura, considers dishonorable, from kunai and smoke bombs to assassinations from the rooftops, and the tension between the samurai code and becoming the Ghost drives everything. Kurosawa Mode turns the game into a black-and-white samurai film with grain and vintage-sounding audio, and the music by Ilan Eshkeri and Shigeru Umebayashi gives the island's landscapes a haunting beauty.

Tsushima rewards wandering. Foxes lead you to Inari shrines, hot springs offer a moment of reflection, bamboo strikes test your timing, and you can sit down to compose a haiku from the view in front of you. The Director's Cut adds the Iki Island expansion, a new story in which Jin travels to a neighboring island to face a Mongol shaman known as the Eagle, whose tribe uses hallucinogens to force him to confront the memory of his father. Iki brings new enemy types, animal sanctuaries and archery challenges, and the release also includes Legends, the cooperative mode built for online play.

The result feels like stepping into a classic samurai film, with a world so beautiful that photo mode becomes a pastime of its own. The PlayStation 4 Director's Cut is the fullest version of Sucker Punch's samurai epic for the system, ready for a first journey or a return trip.
