Item Description
Ghave, Guru of Spores is a self-contained combo engine wearing a mushroom cap. The five-mana white-black-green Fungus Shaman enters as a 0/0 with five +1/+1 counters, and both of its abilities trade resources back and forth: pay one and remove a +1/+1 counter from a creature you control to make a 1/1 Saproling, or pay one and sacrifice a creature to put a +1/+1 counter on target creature.
Those two loops feed each other, which is why Ghave has led counters and Saproling Commander decks since the original 2011 Commander products. Add a mana-producing sacrifice outlet like Ashnod's Altar plus a doubler like Doubling Season and the loops go infinite. Even without a combo, Ghave turns every spare mana into more bodies or bigger ones, rescues value from creatures that are about to die anyway and fuels aristocrats payoffs all game long.
This is the Double Masters 2022 foil-etched printing, collector number 498, illustrated by James Paick. Double Masters 2022 was a premium reprint set packed with Commander favorites, and its etched foil Ghave is a striking way to lead a counters deck.
