That grin has been lurking in the Pokémon Trading Card Game since the 1990s. Gengar was one of the holo cards in the Fossil expansion, a Ghost-type favorite from the days of Lavender Town, and the Gengar-EX Box brings the Shadow Pokémon back as the star of a fall 2016 collection.
Pokémon-EX were the heavy hitters of the Black & White and XY eras: bigger Hit Points, stronger attacks, and a built-in risk, because knocking one out gave your opponent two Prize cards instead of one. Putting Gengar in that role suits its personality perfectly. It is the mischievous Pokémon that hides in your shadow, now with the stat line to back up its reputation.
This box arrived near the end of the XY era, a period collectors remember fondly for its full-art cards and for bringing classic Kanto Pokémon back into the spotlight. A sealed EX box from that run captures a specific moment in the hobby, when themed collection boxes built around a single star Pokémon were one of the easiest ways to get a promo of your favorite into a binder.
