Ten kingdoms, one war-scarred continent and more officers than most strategy games bother to name: Generation of Chaos is Idea Factory's big, unapologetically dense take on fantasy warfare, brought to North American PSP owners by NIS America in 2006. In the Lost Grounds, winning battles is only half the job. You run a kingdom, decide where its money goes and push its borders outward town by town, fort by fort.
The story opens in the shadow of Dravania, a nation rebuilt into a military power by the shrewd Minister Zeo after a revolution left it in ruins. You start with a choice of two campaigns, Dravania or Zodia, and the full game stretches across ten campaigns, each with its own storyline, featuring more than 150 characters in all. Each turn on the strategy map gives you a handful of unit moves to spend invading neighbors, and between battles you fortify towns, build up markets, reshape the surrounding terrain and recruit new officers into your ranks.
Then the armies meet. Battles play out in real time, thirty against thirty, with each side's commander leading 29 soldiers into the fight. You set the formation and the orders, such as charging the enemy general or holding the line, and then watch unit matchups and the lay of the land decide who has the edge. Skills draw on the commander's own SP pool, and super moves charge as your army takes damage or your commander lands hits, with up to three stored for the right moment. Topple the enemy commander and the fight is usually over.
Reviewers at the time were candid that it asks for patience: there is no hand-holding tutorial and the pacing is deliberate. What you get in return is real strategic depth that weaves economics, diplomacy and combat into one long campaign, plus voiced super-move cutscenes for its most important characters. If you have ever lost a weekend to the territory maps of Dragon Force or Romance of the Three Kingdoms, this is a portable cousin with an anime cast and a lot of map to conquer.
