Item Description
Gears of War: Judgment opens with Damon Baird in handcuffs, standing before a military tribunal and telling his side of the story. People Can Fly, working with Epic Games, set this 2013 prequel just weeks after Emergence Day, the moment the Locust burst out of the ground, and each mission is framed as testimony from a member of Kilo Squad. That structure gives the campaign a punchy, episodic pace unlike anything else in the series.
Baird leads the squad alongside Augustus Cole, former Onyx Guard cadet Sofia Hendrik and the hardened UIR veteran Garron Paduk as they fight through the city of Halvo Bay. The standout idea is the Declassified Mission system. At the start of each section you can choose to reveal the classified details of what happened, which adds a twist such as limited visibility, restricted weapons, a timer or tougher enemies, and earns more stars on the scoreboard. A Smart Spawn System varies the enemies you face from playthrough to playthrough, so returning to a mission never feels quite the same. The villain is Karn, a Locust general with a pack of Seeders and a towering silhouette.
Judgment rethought the series' multiplayer. OverRun is an asymmetric team mode where Locust players attack COG fortifications, using class-based soldiers on one side and a roster of beasts on the other. Survival turns that into a cooperative last stand, and Free-for-All brought true every-man-for-himself matches to Gears for the first time. The controls were revised too, with grenades moved to the left bumper and the Y button handling weapon swaps.
The bonus Aftermath campaign, unlocked through Judgment's stars, rejoins Baird and Cole during the events of Gears of War 3 and ties the two eras together. It is the most experimental chapter of the original Gears era, and the prequel to play once the trilogy is done.
