Item Description

Gears of War 2 begins with humanity going on the offensive, and that shift in posture changes everything. Instead of holding the line, Marcus Fenix, Dom Santiago and the rest of Delta Squad ride massive Derrick transports straight into Locust territory and then plunge underground into the Hollow itself, the vast tunnel network the enemy calls home. Epic Games' 2008 sequel is bigger, louder and stranger than the original, and it never stops escalating.

The cover-and-flank rhythm is intact, but almost everything around it got sharper. You can now grab a downed enemy and use him as a meat shield, two Lancers locking chainsaws start a button-mashing duel, and new heavy weapons such as the Mortar and the Mulcher give firefights real weight. The set pieces are what people remember: fighting from the back of a tank across a frozen lake, cutting your way out of the inside of a colossal Riftworm, and facing the chainsaw-staff-wielding Skorge. The campaign supports two-player co-op with each player picking their own difficulty, and it finally gives Dom's search for his wife Maria the payoff that turned it into one of the series' most emotional moments.

Then there is Horde. Gears of War 2 introduced the mode that pits up to five players against fifty escalating waves of Locust, and it was copied across the industry for years afterward, becoming a standard template for cooperative survival in shooters. Competitive multiplayer expanded to five-on-five matches with modes such as Wingman, Guardian and Submission, built around the shotgun-heavy close-quarters play that defined the series online.

Visually it pushed Unreal Engine 3 further than the first game did, with the gray, rain-soaked cities of Sera giving way to glowing caverns and the Locust capital of Nexus, ruled by Queen Myrrah. Splitscreen co-op through the campaign is still a terrific couch experience, and this is the entry that gave the franchise its most influential idea.
