Item Condition

Complete in box: the cartridge, the manual and the box, all original; anything beyond that is included only if you can see it in the photos. Look over the photos for condition, packaging and details. Every cartridge's shell, label and board are checked for authenticity when it comes into the store, and it's tested before it's listed. It ships in a collector's bag or a hard plastic case.

Item Description

Four heroes, one maze, and a horde of monsters pouring out of generators faster than you can cut them down: Gauntlet II is pure arcade panic, and this Game Boy port, published by Mindscape in 1991 and developed by Eastridge Technology, squeezes that formula onto a handheld. Choose the Warrior, Valkyrie, Wizard or Elf, each with a different balance of strength, speed and magic, then carve a path to each level's exit.

The core loop is simple and endlessly compulsive. Monster generators keep spawning enemies until you smash them, so every room becomes a quick decision about what to fight, what to destroy first and what to run past. With more than a hundred levels to work through, the dungeon keeps unfolding long after the novelty of arcade action on a handheld wears off.

The real party trick is multiplayer. Like its arcade parent, the Game Boy version was built for a crowd: up to four players can link up through link cables and the Game Boy Four Player Adapter, each taking one of the four heroes. Getting four Game Boys into one room was an occasion in 1991, and Gauntlet II was among the few games that made the effort pay off.

In the arcade, Gauntlet II was the follow-up that let several players pick the same class, color-coding them so the narrator could call out a "Red Wizard" or "Yellow Elf." On the Game Boy, the German magazine Play Time singled out the port's smooth eight-directional scrolling, and today it plays as a snapshot of the era when every arcade hit was being shrunk down for the pocket, with this one keeping its co-op heart intact.
