Item Description
Few Disney cartoons of the 1990s had the brooding ambition of Gargoyles, the story of a clan of stone guardians who awaken in modern Manhattan after a thousand-year sleep. Its leader, Goliath, starred in a 1995 Sega Genesis platformer that never made it to other consoles of the day, and Gargoyles Remastered brings that overlooked chapter of 16-bit Disney history to Switch.
The game is a side-scrolling action platformer built around Goliath's raw power. He slashes with his claws, hurls enemies aside and crashes down with a stomp attack as he battles through five stages, each broken into smaller areas, with plenty of climbing, clinging and double-jumping between the brawls. It's a tough game in the classic 16-bit mold, with limited continues and a final stage that will test anyone's patience.
Empty Clip Studios' remaster redraws the action with new hand-drawn animation and enhanced effects inspired by the animated series, so the characters finally look like they stepped out of the show. You can choose between the original Genesis presentation and the remastered look, three difficulty settings are available, and a rewind feature makes the tougher stretches far more manageable than they were in 1995.
Critics were mixed on how well the original gameplay has aged, but the appeal is easy to see: this is the most practical way to play Goliath's only 16-bit adventure on modern hardware, with both versions of the game in one place. For fans of the show, seeing Goliath rendered in artwork that matches the cartoon is the real reward.
