Item Description
Gandalf, Friend of the Shire is the wizard who always arrives exactly when he means to. He is a four-mana blue 2/4 Avatar Wizard with flash, and he lets you cast sorcery spells as though they had flash. Whenever the Ring tempts you, if you chose a creature other than Gandalf as your Ring-bearer, you draw a card.
Giving every sorcery flash changes how a deck plays. Board wipes can wait until the end of an opponent's turn, tutors and card draw can be cast at instant speed, and you can keep mana open for interaction without ever wasting it. In Commander he is a strong piece for blue spellslinger decks and a natural fit in Lord of the Rings-themed lists that tempt with the Ring often.
This is the Secret Lair Drop printing, collector number 1294, a rare with artwork credited to Bakshi Productions, the studio of animator Ralph Bakshi, whose animated The Lord of the Rings arrived in 1978, offered here in foil. That hand-drawn animation heritage gives the wizard a look unlike any other Gandalf card.
