Goemon wakes up to a tremendous racket, steps outside and finds Edo under attack from outer space. That is the setup for Ganbare Goemon: Uchuu Kaizoku Akogingu, Konami's 1996 Japan-only adventure and the first time the blue-haired thief and his ridiculous partner Ebisumaru made the jump to the PlayStation. If you know the series from Legend of the Mystical Ninja on the Super NES or the Nintendo 64 games, the mix of Edo-period comedy and sci-fi absurdity here will feel instantly familiar, and the space-pirate twist pushes the humor somewhere even stranger.
The structure follows Ganbare Goemon 3: a top-down main map links together a run of 2D side-scrolling action stages. Konami used the new hardware to experiment, giving the overhead map a sense of inward depth and staging the boss encounters as polygonal battles, a taste of where the series would go next. It also shakes up the cast in a way fans still talk about. Sasuke and Yae sit this one out as playable characters, replaced by newcomers Goroku and Baban, who never returned in later games and make this entry a true oddity within the franchise.
The soundtrack mixes fresh tracks with remixes of older Goemon themes, with contributions from Akira Yamaoka and Michiru Yamane, two composers better known to many Western players for Silent Hill and Castlevania. Japanese reviewers at the time felt it kept the traditional Goemon atmosphere but didn't push the PlayStation as hard as it could have, which is a fair read: this is a transitional game, closer to the 16-bit entries than to the 3D adventures that followed.
That transitional quality is exactly its appeal for collectors. It never left Japan, it sits at the hinge between the Super Famicom and Nintendo 64 eras of the series, and its one-off cast makes it the strangest chapter in Goemon's long run. On a Konami import shelf, or in a run of the complete Goemon story, it fills a gap most Western collections never cover.
Ganbare Goemon: Uchuu Kaizoku Akogingu is a Ganbare Goemon game released for the PlayStation on March 22, 1996. This is the first Goemon game since Sasuke and Yae's appearance as playable characters that doesn't include either on the playable roster. Instead, they are replaced by the new characters Goroku and Baban. Although Sasuke and Yae are playable characters again in most future games and Goroku and Baban are never seen, mentioned or heard from again after this game. Its unknown why they never appear again, but it is assumed that many fans were upset over Sasuke and Yae being replaced. Gameplay is rather similar to Ganbare Goemon 3, as there's a main map in top-down perspective, which leads to various 2-D sidescrolling levels.
