Darts, air hockey, shuffleboard and a hoop shoot: Game Party takes the row of machines along the back wall of a bowling alley or pizza parlor and puts it on the Wii. Developed by FarSight Studios and published by Midway in 2007, it was one of the first wave of motion-control party collections that followed Wii Sports into living rooms, built for quick, low-stakes rounds with whoever happens to be on the couch.
The lineup leans into bar and arcade staples. You flick the Wii Remote to throw darts and toss balls into a hoop shoot, slide pucks across an air hockey table, push stones down a shuffleboard lane, roll for points in skill ball, and bounce balls into cups in ping cup, the family-friendly take on a college-party classic. Trivia contests round it out for players who would rather answer questions than swing their arms. Nothing takes more than a minute to learn, which was always the point.
Reviewers were brutal about it at the time, and that is part of the fun of owning it today. Critics panned the shallow, simple games, yet buyers kept picking it up anyway, enough for Midway to report more than three million units sold across the Game Party series and to keep it going with Game Party 2 and Game Party 3. It is a perfect snapshot of the early Wii boom, when a box promising darts and air hockey for the whole family could outsell far more polished games, and it captures that moment in Wii history better than almost anything else on the system.
