Game only: the cartridge in a protective holder, no box or manual. The photos are of this exact cartridge — look them over closely for its condition, packaging and details. Every cartridge's shell, label and board are checked for authenticity when it comes into the store, and it's tested before it's listed. It ships in a collector's bag or a hard plastic case.

Item Description

Partway through a wave, a flagship peels away from the top of the alien convoy with two red escorts tucked in behind it, and you have a split second to decide whether to chase the big prize or simply survive. That moment is the whole thrill of Galaxian, and it is why Namco's 1979 arcade shooter mattered so much. Space Invaders had marched its aliens down the screen in rigid rows; Galaxian gave them a will of their own, sending them out of formation in swooping, kamikaze dives straight at your ship, the Galaxip.

This Atari 2600 conversion, released in 1983, keeps that idea front and center. The swarm hovers and shimmers overhead while single attackers and small squadrons break off to strafe you, and you slide along the bottom of the screen trading fire. The rhythm is completely different from a Space Invaders game: instead of whittling down a wall, you are reading attack patterns, picking off divers before they reach you and timing your shots into the gaps. The flagship-and-escort attack is where the scoring drama lives, because in Galaxian the greedy, risky play is the rewarding play.

Designed by Kazunori Sawano, the arcade original was one of the first video games to use RGB color graphics, and it launched the line that produced Galaga in 1981. Galaga went on to become the more famous game, but the swooping dive that defines it started here. Contemporary reviewers liked the 2600 version, with Video Games Player giving it a B+, and it still feels better than most shooters on the console: a direct link between the first wave of space invaders and the frantic formation shooters that followed.

About the game

A Port for Atari 2600, Galaxian expanded on the formula pioneered by Space Invaders. As in the earlier game, Galaxian featured a horde of attacking aliens that exchanged shots with the player. In contrast to Space Invaders, Galaxian added an element of drama by having the aliens periodically make kamikaze-like dives at the player's ship, the Galaxip.
