Item Description
Some cards win games by building something. Fulminator Mage wins them by tearing down the one land your opponent was counting on. This three-mana Elemental Shaman is a 2/2 that you can sacrifice at any moment, with no mana and no tap required, to destroy target nonbasic land. A shockland, a creature-land, a utility land quietly generating value every turn: all of them are fair game, and the threat alone forces opponents to play around it.
Its two hybrid black-or-red mana symbols let it slide into mono-black, mono-red or Rakdos decks without straining the mana. Constructed players have long used it to punish decks built on powerful nonbasic lands, and in Commander it is a compact answer to the Cabal Coffers or Gaea's Cradle that is about to take over the table. Pair it with reanimation or sacrifice-and-return effects and the same Mage can knock out a land again and again.
This is the Modern Masters 2015 Edition printing, collector number 193, a rare illustrated by rk post and offered here in non-foil. Modern Masters 2015 was built to put sought-after Modern cards back into players' hands, and the Mage's flavor text, a warning sign reading “Unsafe Terrain Ahead—Turn Back,” sums up its personality perfectly.
