Item Description
Fulminator Mage has a single ability, and it's a nasty one: sacrifice it to destroy target nonbasic land. No mana, no tapping, no waiting out summoning sickness, so the moment it resolves, an opponent's best land is living on borrowed time.
Nonbasic lands are where many decks hide their power, from the dual lands that hold a mana base together to utility lands that can win games on their own. A three-mana 2/2 that can blow one up whenever you have priority is a flexible answer: keep it on the battlefield as a body, then cash it in when a key land appears. Its hybrid cost of one generic plus two mana that can each be black or red lets it fit mono-black, mono-red and black-red decks alike, and in Commander it pairs especially well with recursion and sacrifice effects that bring it back to do the job again.
First printed in Shadowmoor, it returns here in Ultimate Masters: collector number 215, illustrated by Lucas Graciano, in non-foil. Its flavor text, “Burn, suffer, and trouble me no more,” sets the tone nicely.
