Item Description
Frogger has spent decades dodging traffic, and in Frogger Beyond he finally gets to grow up. The story frames the adventure as a coming-of-age ritual, a journey Frogger must complete to leave his childhood behind, and Konami uses it as an excuse to send its arcade hero far from the highway: across snowy mountains, through lava caverns and out into the depths of space.
Underneath the bigger setting, the game keeps faith with what made Frogger work. The view is overhead and the core action is still precise hopping from platform to platform, timing each jump to slip past enemies and hazards on the way to the goal. Konami Computer Entertainment Hawaii added plenty of new tricks around that foundation. Frogger can flick his tongue or use a high jump to snag coins, a long jump clears gaps and enemies, and coins buy temporary power-ups that let him eat enemies, move faster or become invincible. Licking up bugs earns extra lives. Boss fights and on-rails sequences break things up, with Frogger careening forward on a minecart or a snowboard while you weave around obstacles.
Frogger Beyond is one of the more ambitious attempts to carry the 1981 arcade frog into the 3D era, and while critics were mixed overall, the GameCube version drew the best reviews of its releases. It is a bright, colorful curiosity for anyone who loves Frogger, and an interesting look at how Konami tried to reinvent one of its oldest characters for a new generation of consoles.
