In Freedom Wars, your crime is existing. In this polluted future, humanity lives in walled city-states called Panopticons, where resources are so scarce that simply being born is treated as a burden on society. You begin as a Sinner with a prison sentence of one million years, handed down for the offense of losing your memory, and the only way to whittle it down is to fight for the Panopticon that owns you.
The satire is sharp and very funny. An android warden called an Accessory follows you everywhere, and the Code of Conduct you live under is absurdly strict, so infractions like running more than five paces in your cell or talking to someone of the opposite sex quietly add years to your sentence. Early on you have to earn even basic rights, and the game turns that Orwellian bureaucracy into a progression system that keeps you laughing and grinding at the same time.
Out in the field, the action is fast and acrobatic. Your Thorn, a grappling whip, lets you zip across the battlefield, scale buildings and latch onto the Abductors, huge robotic sentinels that carry captured citizens inside them. Each Abductor plays like a boss fight: you haul it down, tear off its limbs, and rescue the civilian inside before rival Panopticon forces do. The three Thorn types add binding, healing and shielding powers, and a party of AI allies or fellow players makes coordination part of the plan. Developer Shift, known for God Eater, built it with Sony's Japan Studio, and its four-player co-op design shows that hunting-game DNA.
Reviews at launch were mixed, but the setting and the Thorn-swinging combat earned Freedom Wars a lasting cult following, enough that it returned years later as Freedom Wars Remastered. This is the original Vita release where the Panopticon first opened its gates, and a reminder of how strange and ambitious Sony's handheld exclusives could be.
In the not-too-distant future, atmospheric pollution has devastated the earth and resources have become scarce. Harsh new penal communities have formed in order to survive… The communities, known as Panopticons, battle to secure what precious few resources remain. Born into incarceration, you are forced to fight for your freedom in dangerous missions. Work together with up to 4-player co-op in a frenetic blend of action and strategy as you fight to rescue civilians in possession of valuable rival Panopticon knowledge. Complete your missions, reduce your sentence, earn your freedom.
