Game only: the cartridge in a protective holder, no box or manual. The photos are our own, taken from our stock of this game — look them over for condition, packaging and details. Every cartridge's shell, label and board are checked for authenticity when it comes into the store, and it's tested before it's listed. It ships in a collector's bag or a hard plastic case.

Item Description

For more than seventeen years, the wizard Malkil has kept out of sight. Too quiet, perhaps. When Princess Elaine vanishes, the knight rides for the Fortress of Fear in the Zanifer woods, certain his old enemy is behind it, and so begins the Game Boy chapter of Rare's Wizards & Warriors saga.

Its full title is Wizards & Warriors X: The Fortress of Fear, and that "X" is part of the fun: there were no chapters three through nine, a quirk that even Nintendo Power poked fun at. What you get is a more linear, more focused take on the NES games, a hack-and-slash platformer spread across five chapters and 18 levels, with a boss guarding the end of each chapter. Keys unlock treasure chests that hold magical aid such as the Shield of Protection, the Potion of Healing, the Spell of Invincibility and the Boots of Jumping, and tiny Kuros figures grant extra lives.

Be ready for a fight. There are no continues, so a game over means starting the whole quest again from the beginning, and Retro Gamer has called it harder than the NES's Ironsword. That old-school, one-more-try difficulty gives every chapter a real sense of accomplishment once you finally push through it.

It is also an early milestone for Rare, which made it years before Donkey Kong Country and GoldenEye turned the studio into a household name. For collectors of Rare's 8-bit work or anyone following Kuros' adventures, this is the series' only stop on the original Game Boy, and a satisfyingly stubborn challenge for players who like their platformers hard.
