Item Description

Everybody remembers the first choice. Standing in Professor Oak's lab, staring at three Poké Balls and trying to decide between Bulbasaur, Charmander and Squirtle, is one of the oldest rituals in Pokémon, and the First Partner Illustration Collection (Series 1) is built around it. Released in September 2025 as part of the run-up to Pokémon's 30th anniversary, this collection celebrates the first partners of three regions: Kanto, Sinnoh and Alola.

That spread covers a lot of personal history. Kanto's trio takes you back to Red and Blue, Turtwig, Chimchar and Piplup bring back Diamond and Pearl, and Rowlet, Litten and Popplio carry the Sun and Moon generation. The collection's promo cards are drawn in an illustration rare style, the full-scene artwork that has become a favorite of modern Pokémon collectors, showing these starters in their environments rather than on a plain card frame.

Part of the fun is the surprise. The promos rotate across all nine first partners, so opening one becomes a small reveal of which starters you found, and it gives collectors a reason to compare notes and trade toward a complete set. Add in booster packs for some classic pack-opening and the collection works equally well for a binder, a frame on the wall or a birthday gift for the kid who just picked their own first partner.

Series 2 picks up Johto, Unova and Galar, but Series 1 holds the trio that started it all, and it looks wonderful displayed beside its companion.
