Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones opens with a kingdom falling. The Grado Empire, long a peaceful ally, invades Renais without warning, and Princess Eirika escapes the capital with the paladin Seth while her twin brother Ephraim is away fighting deep in Grado territory. Why a friendly empire would turn on its neighbors, and what the five Sacred Stones guarding the continent of Magvel have to do with it, drives a story that grows darker the further it goes, especially once Lyon, the gentle Grado prince and the twins' childhood friend, steps into the light.
Intelligent Systems built this second Western Game Boy Advance entry on the grid-based tactics that won players over in the first: the weapon triangle of swords, axes and lances, careful use of terrain, and permanent death for any unit who falls, which turns every risky move into a decision you have to live with. What's new is freedom. A world map lets you travel between locations, restock at shops and take on optional skirmishes against wandering monsters, while the Tower of Valni gives you a place to train up anyone who has fallen behind. Promotions branch, too, so a Knight might become a General or a Great Knight, and the three trainee units, Ross, Amelia and Ewan, start out barely able to fight before growing through extra tiers into almost anything you want.
Partway through, the campaign splits into Eirika's route and Ephraim's route, each with its own chapters, so a second playthrough unfolds differently from the first. Support conversations build bonds between units who fight side by side and fill in the cast's personalities, and enemies such as revenants, gargoyles and gorgons give the later battles a strange, almost horror-tinged edge. After the credits, a postgame opens up with more to conquer in the Tower of Valni and the Lagdou Ruins.
The Sacred Stones is often recommended as the friendliest door into classic Fire Emblem: the open map and optional battles take the sting out of a rough chapter, while permadeath keeps every turn honest. It reached North America in 2005 as the final Fire Emblem made for the Game Boy Advance, and its sprite work, from the stylized battle animations to the flash of a critical hit, shows Intelligent Systems in full command of the hardware. This is the handheld Fire Emblem that rewards coming back for the other twin's route and a fresh set of promotion choices.
In Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones, you must help protect the nation of Renais from the invading Grado Empire. Plan your strategy, choose your units, and then lead your soldiers in to battle. The more experience your soldiers gain, the more you can upgrade their abilities. This time, your soldiers can gain experience by fighting new monsters in the Tower of Valni.
