Item Description

Few tactical RPG heroes are as easy to root for as Ike. He is a blunt, honest young mercenary with no royal blood and little patience for politics, and when his father’s company, the Greil Mercenaries, is pulled into an invasion that topples the kingdom of Crimea, he finds himself escorting a lost princess, Elincia, across a continent at war. Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance, developed by Intelligent Systems and released on the GameCube in 2005, gave the series its first home console entry released outside Japan, and it made the most of the bigger stage.

The war at the heart of Tellius is more than a clash of armies. The humans, or Beorc, have long feared and mistreated the Laguz, beast tribes who can transform into powerful animal forms in battle, and the story tackles that prejudice with a seriousness that gives the campaign real weight. Ike’s mercenary band slowly becomes a coalition of soldiers, outcasts and Laguz allies, opposed by Daein’s ruthless King Ashnard and the menacing armored figure of the Black Knight, one of the series’ great rivals.

On the battlefield this is classic Fire Emblem, refined. Grid-based battles reward careful positioning, the weapon triangle keeps every matchup in mind, and fallen units are gone for good, so every risky move carries a cost. Path of Radiance adds layers that later entries kept building on: Laguz units transform once their gauge fills, skills can be assigned to customize your army, bonus experience can be spent between chapters to raise favorite units, and base conversations and support pairings flesh out a large, likable cast. You can even forge your own weapons, naming them and choosing their strengths.

The GameCube’s power shows in the animated battle sequences and full-motion cutscenes that bring key story moments to life, a major leap for a series that had previously lived on 2D sprites. Ike made such an impression that he joined the Super Smash Bros. roster in Brawl, and his story continues directly in Radiant Dawn on the Wii. Path of Radiance is where it all starts, and with permadeath, forging and a campaign built for multiple playthroughs, it is a strategy game you can sink many evenings into.
