Item Description

For a quarter century, Fire Emblem Gaiden was the series' great unknown in the West: the odd 1992 Famicom sequel with a roaming world map, magic that drained the caster's own life and no weapon triangle at all. Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia finally brought it over in 2017, and Intelligent Systems did not settle for a simple port. Every map, character and scene was rebuilt for the Nintendo 3DS with full voice acting, animated cutscenes and Hidari's elegant character art, turning a once-obscure experiment into one of the richest-looking games on the handheld.

The story belongs to two childhood friends. Alm is a village boy who takes up arms with the Deliverance, a resistance army fighting for the crumbling kingdom of Zofia, while Celica, a young priestess, sets out to learn what has become of the goddess Mila as famine spreads across the land. Their armies march separately across Valentia, and you alternate between them on the world map, following two very different journeys through the same war as they slowly converge on the empire of Rigel and its god, Duma. The remake adds new story scenes and characters, including the masked knight Conrad, that tie the original's threads together more tightly.

Battles play by Gaiden's rules rather than modern Fire Emblem's, and that is a big part of the appeal. Spells cost hit points to cast, archers can fire on adjacent enemies as well as from range, and weapons teach their wielders new combat arts the longer they are used. Alm's friends from his home village can grow into one of several classes at Mila's shrines, so a farm boy might end up as your most dependable mage. Between fights you walk through towns and 3D dungeons in a third-person view, slashing at enemies before an encounter begins and managing a fatigue system that keeps you from leaning on the same heroes forever. Mila's Turnwheel lets you rewind a few turns when a gamble goes wrong, a welcome safety net in a game that still punishes careless positioning.

Echoes was the last new mainline Fire Emblem made for the 3DS before the series moved to Switch, and it plays like a farewell from a team at the height of its handheld craft. It lets English-speaking players finally experience the series' most experimental early chapter with its strange, lean rules intact and a presentation worthy of a modern release. If Awakening and Fates are where you met Fire Emblem, this is the history lesson that feels nothing like homework.
