Item Description

Two Eikons collide over a burning battlefield, and you are in control of one of them. Moments like that define Final Fantasy XVI, the 2023 PlayStation 5 entry that took the series in its darkest and most action-driven direction yet. Its world, Valisthea, is shaped by the Mothercrystals and by the Dominants, rare people who can transform into living Eikons, and by the nations that wield them as weapons of war.

Clive Rosfield begins as the firstborn son of the Archduke of Rosaria, sworn to protect his younger brother Joshua, the Dominant of the Phoenix. One night of fire and betrayal tears that life apart, and the story follows Clive across years as a soldier hunting the mysterious dark Eikon that destroyed his family, and then as a man fighting to free the Bearers, people born with magic and treated as property. Jill Warrick, the loyal wolfhound Torgal and the roguish Cid round out a cast that carries both the political stakes and the personal ones.

Battle director Ryota Suzuki, a Capcom veteran whose credits include Devil May Cry 5, shaped the combat, and it shows. Clive mixes sword combos, dodges and parries with Eikon abilities he can swap on the fly, chaining the powers of Phoenix, Garuda, Titan and more into flowing strings that feel like a character action game. For players who want the story without the execution demands, Timely Accessories can automate dodges and combos. The Eikon battles themselves are set pieces of staggering scale, and the clash with Titan is the one players still bring up first.

Producer Naoki Yoshida, the director who rebuilt Final Fantasy XIV, and composer Masayoshi Soken give the game its sense of scale and its emotional range; Soken's score moves from choral thunder in the Eikon fights to gentle themes at the Hideaway, Clive's base of operations. Active Time Lore lets you pause any cutscene to brush up on the people and places involved, a thoughtful touch in a story this dense. As the first mainline Final Fantasy to carry an M rating, this is the entry that proved the series could go fully action without losing its heart.
