Item Description

Breeding a gold chocobo, tracking down Cloud's ultimate weapon, finding the materia that unleashes Knights of the Round: in 1997 a lot of PlayStation owners learned Final Fantasy VII's deepest secrets with a BradyGames guide open on their laps. This is that book, the official strategy guide published for the original PlayStation release.

Final Fantasy VII was a lot of game to take in. It stretched across three discs, from the reactor bombing in Midgar to the Gold Saucer, the snowfields of the north and the long pursuit of Sephiroth, with a materia system that rewarded anyone willing to experiment. The guide walks through the journey with maps and boss strategies, then digs into the side content that made the game legendary on the playground: materia combinations, mini-games, hidden items, the ultimate weapons and the chocobo breeding chain that leads to Knights of the Round.

Paging through it today is a trip straight back to the year the RPG went mainstream in North America, when screenshots of pre-rendered backgrounds felt like a peek into the future and a printed chart was the only way to know which chocobo to breed next. Set it beside the three-disc game it was written for and the shelf tells the whole story of 1997's biggest adventure.
