The best toy box in the Final Fantasy series might be Final Fantasy V's job menu. Collect the shards of a shattered crystal and your party can become Knights, Black Mages, Thieves, Dragoons, Summoners, Ninjas, Dancers and far more, but the real magic is that mastered abilities travel with you. A Knight who learned White Magic, a Ninja who throws spells, a Monk who can steal: the system rewards experimentation at every turn, and a decades-old game still inspires players to invent new challenge runs and build combinations.

The story is lighter in tone than its neighbors in the series, but warm and full of personality. Bartz Klauser is a wandering adventurer whose chocobo, Boko, is his closest companion until a meteor falls and introduces him to Lenna, princess of Tycoon, Galuf, an old man who cannot remember who he is, and Faris, a pirate captain with a secret. The winds have stopped, the crystals are failing, and behind it all is Exdeath, a warlock born from a tree that absorbed the evil sealed inside it. Along the way you meet Gilgamesh, the bumbling swordsman whose bridge battle made him a series favorite.

Final Fantasy V Advance is a strong version of the game. It features a new English translation, and it adds four new jobs, the Gladiator, Cannoneer, Oracle and Necromancer, which open up even more party-building possibilities. A post-game dungeon called the Sealed Temple holds powerful new enemies and bosses, and the release adds a bestiary and music player for completionists. All of it sits on top of Nobuo Uematsu's score and the bright, expressive sprite work of the Super Famicom original.

For North American players, Final Fantasy V was the one that got away for years: it skipped the Super Nintendo entirely here and first arrived in English on the PlayStation. This Game Boy Advance release, published by Square Enix in 2006, gave it a portable home with extra content the earlier versions do not have. It is the Final Fantasy for tinkerers, a game that hands you a huge set of tools and trusts you to break it with them.
