Item Description

Enemies don't drop money, magic has no MP bar, and there is no game over screen waiting when your party falls. Final Fantasy: The 4 Heroes of Light rethinks some of the genre's oldest habits while looking back to the series' earliest days, and the result is a small, distinctive RPG with a rhythm all its own. Matrix Software, the studio behind the DS remakes of Final Fantasy III and IV, built it as an original adventure, and producer Tomoya Asano described it as a classic fantasy RPG made with today's technology.

The story opens like a fairy tale. After Louhi, the Witch of the North, turns the people of Horne to stone, four young heroes, Brandt, Jusqua, Yunita and Princess Aire, set out to break the curse. Their travels take them from the magic kingdom of Guera and the town of Liberte to the floating island of Spelvia, and a twist in time raises the stakes well beyond a simple rescue. The game also includes a co-op mode for up to four players.

Battles are turn-based with random encounters, but the economy is entirely its own. Characters gain an Action Point each turn, up to five, and nearly every action, magic included, costs AP; the Boost command spends a turn to build more, so every round becomes a small decision about striking now or banking power for something big. Instead of a traditional job menu, the Crown System lets each hero swap headgear at any time to take on a new role, and the gems monsters drop upgrade crowns, weapons and armor. With fifteen inventory slots per character and six abilities active at once, building the party feels like packing carefully for a long trip.

The presentation is the other big draw. Akihiko Yoshida's character designs and art direction give the world a soft, pastel storybook look, and Naoshi Mizuta's deliberately retro score is full of strong melodies. Reviewers were split on the grinding it asks for, but the team's plans for a follow-up grew into Bravely Default, which makes this the first step on the road to that series. It is an old-fashioned quest with a handful of bold new ideas, and a fascinating corner of Final Fantasy history on the DS.
