Item Description

Ramza Beoulve is born into a powerful noble house of Ivalice, and Delita Heiral is the commoner raised beside him like a brother. Final Fantasy Tactics is the story of how a war of succession pulls those two friends onto very different roads, and The War of the Lions is the expanded 2007 PSP retelling of one of the deepest tactical RPGs Square ever made.

Battles play out on isometric, height-mapped grids where elevation, facing and turn order all matter, and the job system is what keeps you planning between fights. Units start as Squires and Chemists, earn job points to unlock Knights, Archers, Monks, White and Black Mages, Thieves, Time Mages, Summoners and stranger classes beyond, then mix abilities learned in one job with another. A Knight carrying White Magic as a backup, or a Monk who learned to steal, is only the start; the strangest class, the Arithmetician, casts spells on any unit whose stats match a chosen number. Building a squad that breaks the game in your favor is half the joy.

Beneath the battles runs a political saga of feuding noble houses, a scheming church and the mysterious Zodiac Stones, written by director Yasumi Matsuno's team with the same taste for intrigue later seen in Vagrant Story and Final Fantasy XII. Akihiko Yoshida's character art and the music of Hitoshi Sakimoto and Masaharu Iwata give Ivalice a weathered, storybook gravity, and the plot rewards attention with betrayals that land hard.

The War of the Lions adds new CG cinematics drawn in a painterly style that matches the game's art, a fully reworked English script with a deliberately old-world, almost Shakespearean flavor, and two new jobs, the Onion Knight and the Dark Knight. New recruits include Balthier from Final Fantasy XII and Luso from Final Fantasy Tactics A2, and new ad hoc multiplayer battles let two players team up or fight each other. Some spell animations slow down on the PSP, a well-known quirk of this port, but it is the version with the most content and the richest script, which makes it the edition to own if you want Ivalice at its most complete.
