Item Description

It starts with a snowball fight. Marche Radiuju is the new kid in the quiet town of St. Ivalice, and after a schoolyard battle in the snow, his friend Mewt shows the group an old book he picked up. By the next morning, the town has been rewritten into Ivalice, a kingdom of clans, magic, monsters and judges, and Marche is the only one who wants to go home. Mewt, Ritz and Marche's younger brother, Doned, each have a reason to prefer this new world, and that quiet conflict gives Final Fantasy Tactics Advance a surprising amount of heart for a strategy game.

Battles play out on isometric grids where positioning, height and facing all matter, and you build a clan from five races, Humans, Bangaa, Nu Mou, Viera and Moogles, each with access to its own set of jobs. Abilities are learned through the equipment you carry: equip a weapon, earn ability points in battle, and the skill tied to it becomes yours for good. That loop of chasing new gear to unlock new abilities, then mixing two jobs' skill sets on one unit, is what keeps players hooked for dozens of hours, and there are hundreds of missions to take on from the pub.

Every fight also comes with laws. Judges patrol each battle and announce what is forbidden that day, whether that is a type of magic, healing items or a certain kind of attack, and breaking the law earns a yellow or red card, with prison waiting for repeat offenders. It forces you to rethink a strategy you have relied on for hours, and it makes the usual party unpredictable in the best way. Two players with a link cable can trade items and battle together, and Hitoshi Sakimoto's sweeping score gives every skirmish an epic feel.

Final Fantasy Tactics Advance was built by the same Square team behind the PlayStation's Final Fantasy Tactics, and it marked part of the company's return to Nintendo hardware, published by Nintendo in 2003. It is friendlier than its predecessor without being shallow, and it gave the Ivalice setting a much wider audience. Few handheld strategy RPGs have this much to discover, and its success led to a DS sequel, Grimoire of the Rift.

About the game

Squaresoft brings its popular Final Fantasy franchise to the Game Boy Advance in the form of strategic warfare. Final Fantasy Tactics Advance trails the story of a young boy named Marche who is magically transported from his sleepy modern-time home to a strange kingdom where magic and adventure reign supreme. Players control a set of troops who specialize in various fighting, healing, magic, and archery skills (or job classes). Strategically positioning characters on the battle map, and calculating offensive advances are the keys to success. Two players can battle and trade items with the aid of the GBA link cable.
