Complete in box: the game cartridge and its original case, with any printed inserts shown in the photos. Look over the photos for condition, packaging and details. Every game is tested before it's listed. It ships in a collector's bag or a hard plastic case.
It begins with a kidnapping disguised as a theater performance. Zidane Tribal and the Tantalus troupe sail into Alexandria aboard their airship theater to stage I Want to Be Your Canary for Queen Brahne, planning to snatch Princess Garnet in the middle of the show, only to discover the princess wants to be kidnapped. From that first scene, Final Fantasy IX announces itself as something warmer and more playful than the futuristic entries that came before it.
Square released it on the original PlayStation in 2000 as a deliberate return to the series' crystal-and-castle roots, with knights, black mages, moogles and medieval towns after the sci-fi worlds of VII and VIII. The party is one of the most memorable in the franchise: the young black mage Vivi, whose questions about what it means to exist give the story its emotional core; the stubborn knight Steiner; Freya, a Burmecian dragoon searching for a lost love; the gourmand Quina; and the young summoner Eiko. Their nemesis Kuja is a flamboyant, theatrical villain who fits the game's stage-play framing perfectly.
Battles use the classic Active Time Battle system with four-character parties, and abilities are learned from equipment: wear a weapon or piece of armor long enough and its skill becomes permanently yours, which makes every new shop and treasure chest worth investigating. Trance turns characters into supercharged versions of themselves when the pressure builds, and the side activities run deep, from the Tetra Master card game to Chocobo Hot and Cold treasure hunts. Nobuo Uematsu's score ranges from the tender "Melodies of Life" to rousing battle themes, and fans rank it among the very best of his career.
The Switch release, which arrived in 2019, brings the remastered version to Nintendo hardware with higher-resolution character models, remastered cutscenes, an updated interface, autosave and optional boosters such as high-speed mode and the ability to switch off random encounters. Those extras make a long adventure easier to fit around modern life, and because every booster is optional, purists can still play Gaia's story exactly as challenging as it was in 2000. Curling up with it in handheld mode feels just right for a game this cozy.
The console version of Final Fantasy IX brings enhanced character models, updated UI and fully remastered cutscenes. It includes convenience features such as autosave, optional cheats like max damage or no encounters, and platform-specific achievements or trophies. While the core experience matches the PC version, the console releases are optimized for smooth plug-and-play gameplay without the need for additional setup or mods.
