Complete in box: the cartridge, the manual and the box, all original; anything beyond that is included only if you can see it in the photos. The photos are of this exact copy — look them over closely for its condition, packaging and details. Every cartridge's shell, label and board are checked for authenticity when it comes into the store, and it's tested before it's listed. It ships in a collector's bag or a hard plastic case.
Cecil Harvey begins Final Fantasy IV as the villain of someone else's story. Captain of Baron's Red Wings airship fleet and a Dark Knight in service to his king, he is ordered to take the Water Crystal from the peaceful town of Mysidia, and the guilt of following that order sets everything else in motion. What follows is a redemption arc for the ages: a betrayal, a burned village, a climb up Mount Ordeals to cast off the darkness and become a Paladin, and a journey that eventually leaves the planet entirely.
Final Fantasy IV is also where the series introduced its Active Time Battle system, the ticking gauges that turned turn-based combat into a race to act before the enemy does. The cast rotates through the story, from the young summoner Rydia and the dragoon Kain to the sage Tellah, the twin mages Palom and Porom, the monk Yang and the engineer Cid, and every one of them has a role in combat that fits who they are. Nobuo Uematsu's score, from the opening theme to the battle music and the final confrontation, ranks with his finest work.
Final Fantasy IV Advance, developed by Tose for Square Enix, is based on the WonderSwan Color version and adds plenty of its own. Character portraits accompany the dialogue, a fresh translation stays closer to the original Japanese script, and a quicksave lets you suspend your game anywhere. North American players who first met the game as Final Fantasy II on the Super Nintendo got a softened version, and this release restores its full challenge. It adds new dungeons with new weapons, items and bosses, including the Lunar Ruins, and lets you switch party members near the end, giving characters who left the story a chance to fight in the final battles.
That combination makes the Game Boy Advance release the version for players who want the story told as written, the challenge set where its designers intended and endgame content the Super Nintendo never had. It is a portable home for Cecil, Kain, Rosa and Rydia, and the game where Final Fantasy's storytelling ambitions came into full focus.
Final Fantasy IV Advance is largely based on the WonderSwan Color version. Some changes include the addition of character portraits in text boxes, the ability to switch party members, increased difficulty, and new dungeons with new items and weapons along with new bosses. The script received a re-translation more faithful to the original material. The Quicksave, which allows the player to save the current position (regardless of where) in a file that is deleted upon loading, is featured.
