Item Description

Final Fantasy II threw out experience points entirely. Swing a sword and your sword skill climbs; take a beating and your maximum HP rises; cast Fire over and over and the spell grows stronger. Square's 1988 sequel was the series' first big experiment, and this PSP edition, released for the franchise's 20th anniversary, is the fullest version of it.

It was also the first Final Fantasy to put named heroes and a real story at the center. Firion, Maria and Guy flee when the Empire of Palamecia overruns their home, and they join Princess Hilda's rebellion against the Emperor. The tale is surprisingly willing to lose allies along the way, Maria's brother Leon turns up on the wrong side of the war, and the giant airship Dreadnought looms over the rebels' hopes. Conversations run on a keyword system: learn a term such as the rebels' password, "wild rose," and you can raise it with other characters to open new paths.

Series fans will spot the beginnings of long traditions here. Chocobos make their debut, a character named Cid appears for the first time, and the Ultima spell starts its legend in this game. Nobuo Uematsu's score includes the stirring rebel army theme, one of the earliest pieces of Final Fantasy music to stay with players for decades.

The PSP version redraws everything in sharp, high-resolution 2D with updated music, and it builds on the Game Boy Advance Dawn of Souls remake by keeping Soul of Rebirth, a post-game story starring companions who fell during the main quest. It also adds something new: the Arcane Labyrinth, a set of three dungeons that opens the way to the Arcane Sanctuary. The use-based growth system has always divided players, and part of the fun is learning to work with its quirks, but nothing else in the series plays quite like it. As a portable edition of the entry where Final Fantasy first started telling character stories, it makes a natural partner to the PSP release of the original.
