Complete in box: the cartridge, the manual and the box, all original; anything beyond that is included only if you can see it in the photos. The photos are of this exact copy — look them over closely for its condition, packaging and details. Every cartridge's shell, label and board are checked for authenticity when it comes into the store, and it's tested before it's listed. It ships in a collector's bag or a hard plastic case.
Two very different ideas of what Final Fantasy could be share this cartridge. The first game, from 1987, is a classic quest in its purest form: four Light Warriors, each holding a darkened orb, set out to defeat the Fiends of Earth, Fire, Water and Wind and break a cycle that leads back to the knight Garland and the ancient being called Chaos. Its sequel threw much of that away a year later in favor of a named cast and a war story. Dawn of Souls, released in North America by Nintendo in 2004, rebuilt both games with the brighter look of their WonderSwan Color remakes and added a substantial amount of new content to each.
Final Fantasy I lets you build your own party from six classes, Warrior, Thief, Monk, Red Mage, White Mage and Black Mage, and the pleasure is in seeing how your combination survives the long road to the final battle. This version switches spellcasting to a standard MP system and smooths out much of the original's difficulty. It also adds the Soul of Chaos, four bonus dungeons that open after each Fiend is defeated, filled with bosses drawn from later Final Fantasy games.
Final Fantasy II is the bolder experiment. Firion, Maria, Guy and Leon are four young friends swept into the Wild Rose rebellion against the Emperor of Palamecia, and their story is darker and more personal than anything the series had tried before, with allies who fall along the way. There are no experience levels: characters grow by doing, so taking hits raises HP and casting spells strengthens them. Conversations hinge on a keyword system, where you learn important words and ask others about them. Dawn of Souls adds Soul of Rebirth, a new chapter unlocked after the ending that follows fallen companions on a journey of their own.
Together, the two games show Final Fantasy finding its identity: the class-based party building that would shape the series, and the story-first ambition that would define it. FFII's growth system, the work of designer Akitoshi Kawazu, also pointed toward his later SaGa series. Having both of the series' first chapters on one Game Boy Advance cartridge, with the bonus content that exists only in these remakes, is a fine way to start a Final Fantasy collection at the very beginning.
Final Fantasy I & II: Dawn of Souls is a compilation of the first two games in the Final Fantasy series. Graphically, it is similar to the previously released enhanced remakes of both games for the WonderSwan Color.
