Item Description

Four strangers arrive at Cornelia, each carrying a darkened crystal, and their first job is to rescue a princess from a renegade knight named Garland. It is a modest opening for a game that would grow into a series spanning dozens of sequels, and the PSP edition of Final Fantasy, built for the franchise's 20th anniversary, shows how much adventure was packed in from the very start.

Before setting out you build your own party of four from six classes: Warrior, Thief, Monk, Red Mage, White Mage and Black Mage. Every combination plays differently, and choosing whether to bring a healer, double up on fighters or gamble on a pair of Red Mages is a decision you live with for the whole journey. Later, a trial in a dragon's domain upgrades the party into Knights, Ninjas, Masters and Wizards, one of the most satisfying power spikes in any classic RPG.

The quest itself is a grand tour of fantasy set pieces. Restoring the Earth, Fire, Water and Wind crystals means toppling four elemental Fiends, Lich, Marilith, Kraken and Tiamat, in rotting caverns, a volcano, a sunken shrine and a fortress in the sky, while earning a ship, a canoe and eventually an airship to reach them. The ending ties it all together with a twist involving time that still feels clever for a game first released in 1987.

This version starts from the Game Boy Advance Dawn of Souls remake, so magic runs on an MP pool rather than the original's per-level spell charges, and it keeps that release's bonus dungeons, where bosses from later Final Fantasy games wait with remixed versions of their own battle themes. On top of that comes the Labyrinth of Time, a new dungeon made for this release, along with crisp high-resolution sprites and updated music. If you have only met the series through its later entries, this is the cleanest, best-looking way to see where the crystals, the airship and the class-change idea began.
