Item Description

FIFA 2002 is the year EA made you earn your passes. For the first time the series put a power bar on passing, so every ball played across the pitch depended on how long you held the button, and dribbling was toned down so you could no longer slalom through an entire back line. The bar can be adjusted to taste, but the shift was clear: build-up play mattered, and goals felt like they belonged to you.

The standout mode is the Road to the World Cup, which follows the real qualification format for each confederation in the run-up to the 2002 tournament. Nations that had already qualified, such as France, Japan and South Korea, play friendlies to raise their FIFA ranking instead, and success unlocks regional continental cups. Win them all and the FIFA Confederations Cup opens up. Victories are rewarded through a Panini-licensed card system that hands out star player cards, a fun nod to the sticker albums so many players grew up with. The club side expanded too, with many more European crests, including PSV, Ajax and Feyenoord, and the Swiss Super League appearing for the first time.

In North America the game carried the title FIFA Soccer 2002: Major League Soccer, and on Nintendo's new console it was an early entry in the GameCube's sports lineup, giving launch-era owners a full international football game to play on day-one hardware. If you want to relive the 2002 qualifying campaign with the passing system that pointed FIFA toward its modern feel, this is the edition to play.

About the game

FIFA Football 2002 (known as FIFA Soccer 2002: Major League Soccer in North America, and FIFA 2002: Road to FIFA World Cup in Japan), commonly known as FIFA 2002, is a football video game released in 2001, produced by Electronic Arts and released by EA Sports. FIFA 2002 is the ninth game in the FIFA series. Power bars for passes were introduced, and dribbling reduced in order to attain a higher challenge level. The power bar can also be customised to suit the gamer's preference. The game also includes club emblems for many more European clubs as well as for major Dutch clubs such as PSV, AFC Ajax and Feyenoord, although there was no Dutch league of any kind (they were under the "Rest of World" header). This game also features, for the first time, the Swiss Super League, at the cost of excluding the Greek League. A card reward system licensed from Panini was also introduced where, after winning a particular competition, a star player card is unlocked.
