Winning a Holy Grail War is supposed to be the end of the story. In Fate/Extella: The Umbral Star it is only the beginning: you wake with your memories gone beside Nero Claudius, the Servant who won the Moon's Holy Grail War with you and earned the Regalia that comes with victory. The trouble is that Tamamo no Mae holds a Regalia too, which should be impossible, and the war you thought was over is about to restart on a much larger scale.
The battles borrow the Warriors formula and give it a Fate twist. Each map is divided into connected sectors, and rather than simply cutting down an army you race the opposing side to collect Regime Keys from those sectors until the Regime Matrix is complete and the enemy's Boss Servant appears. Every Servant has a distinct moveset, Noble Phantasms unleash their legendary ultimate attacks, and the Extella Maneuver pulls you and nearby enemies into a strange blue dimension for a stylized finisher.
The story unfolds across separate routes for Nero, Tamamo and Altera, the swordswoman better known as Attila, with Altera's arc singled out by reviewers as the highlight, plus side stories and a final route that ties things together. The roster draws Servants from across the franchise, including Fate/Extra, Fate/stay night, Fate/Zero, Fate/Apocrypha and Fate/Grand Order, and bond levels, unlockable costumes and an in-game encyclopedia for the series' dense terminology reward the time you put in. The performances are in Japanese, with an English localization from XSEED that captures each Servant's verbal quirks.
It continues the story begun in the PSP's Fate/Extra and is very much a love letter to people who already know this world, which is exactly why the Vita release appeals to Type-Moon collectors. The first Extella game was followed by Fate/Extella Link, but this is where the Moon Cell saga's turn toward large-scale action started, with a cast and a story built for longtime fans.
Fate/Extella: The Umbral Star is an action video game in the Fate/stay night series. The game is a single-player action game in which the player takes the role of a "master", who works together with spirits known as servants, who fight large numbers of enemies. The player can name the master, and can decide if they should be male or female. There are sixteen playable servants in the game, divided into eight classes: Saber, Archer, Lancer, Caster, Assassin, Rider, Berserker, and Extra Class. Different servants have different fighting styles: the Saber swordswoman Nero Claudius has powerful sword skills and balanced abilities; the Caster magus Tamamo no Mae can use magic skills; and the Saber swordswoman Attila uses a violent battle style.
