Item Description

Fatal Fury's big idea was a second lane. In SNK's 1991 arcade original, fighters could hop between the foreground and the background of each stage, sidestepping an attack by stepping into the distance and answering from a different plane, a trick that set it apart from the other one-on-one fighters crowding arcades at the time. This Genesis version, ported and published by Takara in 1993, keeps that two-plane system intact, along with the story that launched one of SNK's longest-running series.

The setup is pure early-nineties action movie. Terry Bogard, his brother Andy and their friend Joe Higashi enter the King of Fighters tournament in South Town to reach Geese Howard, the crime lord who murdered the Bogards' father. Along the way they face a lineup of colorful rivals including Duck King, Richard Meyer, Michael Max, Tung Fu Rue and the masked brute Raiden, each with a stage and a fighting style of his own.

The Genesis cartridge is a trimmed-down port, and it's worth knowing what that means. Takara squeezed a Neo Geo game onto a far smaller cartridge, so Hwa Jai and Billy Kane were cut, with your two unchosen heroes stepping in to fill those slots, and the bonus rounds were dropped. What survives is responsive control, the two-plane fighting, solid music and a good share of the voice work, and in two-player versus mode every fighter except Geese is open to pick, which gives the tournament's bosses a chance to throw down in your living room.

This is where Terry Bogard began, and Terry went on to become a fixture of SNK's fighting games and, decades later, a guest fighter in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Playing this first chapter on a Genesis shows how the 16-bit fighting boom carried arcade rivalries into the home, and it lets you see the series' signature ideas, the Bogard brothers' vendetta against Geese and the two-plane battles, in their earliest form.
