Item Description

Fallout: New Vegas begins with a bullet. A man in a checkered suit named Benny steals the package you were carrying, a mysterious Platinum Chip, shoots you in the head and leaves you in a shallow grave outside Goodsprings. A kindly doctor patches you up, and from there the Courier's hunt for revenge spills out across the Mojave Desert and straight into a three-way war for control of Hoover Dam and the glittering Strip.

Obsidian Entertainment, a studio founded by veterans of Black Isle, the team behind Fallout 2, built New Vegas on the engine and systems of Fallout 3 and poured in the reactive, faction-driven writing the original games were famous for. The New California Republic, Caesar's Legion and the enigmatic Mr. House all want the dam, and you can back any of them or strike out on your own with a securitron called Yes Man. Every faction tracks its own reputation with you, speech and skill checks open alternate solutions to quests, and the endings reflect who you helped and who you crossed along the way.

The companions are some of the best-written in the series: the grim sniper Boone, hard-drinking caravaneer Cass, the Brotherhood scribe Veronica, the ghoul mechanic Raul, the robot ED-E and the cyber-dog Rex among them. Hardcore mode turns the Mojave into a real survival test, where you need water, food and sleep, stimpaks heal over time and even ammunition has weight. Wayne Newton croons and quips as Mr. New Vegas on the radio, and the Western-flavored setting gives the whole game a tone all its own, equal parts frontier showdown and lounge-act cool.

New Vegas was followed by four story add-ons, Dead Money, Honest Hearts, Old World Blues and Lonesome Road, plus the Gun Runners' Arsenal and Courier's Stash packs, which were later gathered together in the Ultimate Edition. Its reputation has only grown since launch, and many players now rank it as the best Fallout ever made thanks to its writing and freedom of choice. On PS3 it is the place to experience the Mojave as it was first released, poker chips, power struggles and all.

About the game

In this first-person Western RPG, the player takes on the role of Courier 6, barely surviving after being robbed of their cargo, shot and put into a shallow grave by a New Vegas mob boss. The Courier sets out to track down their robbers and retrieve their cargo, and winds up getting tangled in the complex ideological and socioeconomic web of the many factions and settlements of post-nuclear Nevada.
