Item Description

Fallout 76 is set earlier than any other Fallout. It is 2102, twenty-five years after the Great War, and the residents of Vault 76 step out on Reclamation Day with a single job: go back out and rebuild America, starting with the hills of Appalachia. Bethesda Game Studios made the series' first multiplayer entry a love letter to West Virginia folklore, so the Mothman, the Flatwoods Monster and the Grafton Monster all prowl the map, alongside the Scorchbeasts, giant irradiated bats spreading a plague that turns people into the Scorched.

Appalachia is huge, Bethesda's biggest map at the time, and its regions have real personality: the green Forest around the vault, the chemical glow of the Toxic Valley, the burning coal country of the Ash Heap, the mountain ridges of the Savage Divide and the eerie, crystalline Cranberry Bog. The SPECIAL system becomes a deck of perk cards you swap to suit your build, and the C.A.M.P. lets you set down a portable base almost anywhere and turn it into a home with workbenches, turrets, crops and a lot of salvaged furniture.

It was designed as an online game from the ground up, with players sharing worlds, teaming up for public events, trading, and even launching nuclear missiles from silos after piecing together launch codes. The 2018 launch was famously rough, and the original Appalachia had no living human characters, telling its story through holotapes, notes, terminals and robots. Bethesda kept working at it, and the 2020 Wastelanders update brought human characters, dialogue and factions back to the hills, followed by years of further expansions that reshaped the game.

That turnaround has become part of Fallout 76's legend, one of the more fascinating comebacks of its console generation, and the PlayStation 4 release is a neat piece of that history to hold onto. On a Fallout shelf it fills a gap nothing else covers: the prequel chapter about the first survivors to climb back into the daylight, with John Denver's “Take Me Home, Country Roads,” the song that made the reveal trailer, hanging over the whole thing.
