Item Description
Few RPG openings hit as hard as Fallout 4's. You begin in a sunny suburban kitchen in 2077, a robot butler named Codsworth fussing over breakfast, and within minutes the bombs fall, your family is rushed into Vault 111, and through the frosted glass of a cryo pod you watch strangers kill your spouse and carry off your infant son, Shaun. When you finally stumble out, two centuries have passed and the Commonwealth is waiting: a radiated, strangely gorgeous wreck of greater Boston, from the scrap-walled baseball stadium of Diamond City to the ghoul-run streets of Goodneighbor.
Bethesda Game Studios built this one around freedom and tinkering. V.A.T.S. returns, but now it slows time rather than freezing it, so lining up a shot on a raider's weapon arm feels like a split-second decision. Power armor is no longer just an outfit; it is a walk-in suit you climb into, feed with fusion cores and upgrade piece by piece, and the game hands it to you early, on a rooftop in the town of Concord, for a showdown with a Deathclaw in the street below. The crafting system turns every desk fan and coffee mug into parts for modding pipe pistols and laser rifles, and settlement building lets you turn empty lots into fortified towns with walls, turrets, water purifiers and supply lines between them.
For the first time in the series the hero is fully voiced, and the companions give the long road its warmth: Dogmeat, the hard-boiled synth detective Nick Valentine, the crusading reporter Piper, the mercenary MacCready and plenty more, each with opinions about what you do. Four factions compete for the Commonwealth's future, the Minutemen, the Railroad, the Brotherhood of Steel (arriving by airship) and the secretive Institute, and the hunt for Shaun eventually forces you to pick a side. Inon Zur's score and the 1940s and '50s records spinning on Diamond City Radio set the mood, half dread and half nostalgia.
Fallout 4 won Best Game at the BAFTA Games Awards, kept an enormous community going for years, and found a whole new audience when the Fallout television series premiered in 2024. On PlayStation 4 it is the kind of open world where a quick detour into a ruined diner becomes an evening of side quests, terminal logs and one more locked safe. If the show sent you looking for a way into the wasteland, the Commonwealth is the most generous place to start.
