Item Description
Most Fallout games begin after the end of the world. Fallout 4 lets you watch it happen. The opening drops you into a sunny pre-war morning in Sanctuary Hills, with a family, a robot butler named Codsworth and a Vault-Tec salesman at the door, and then the sirens start. A frantic run to Vault 111, a cryogenic sleep and a horrifying awakening later, you emerge as the Sole Survivor into a Boston-area wasteland some two centuries on, searching for a kidnapped son named Shaun.
The Commonwealth is Bethesda Game Studios' densest wasteland yet. Diamond City is built inside the walls of Fenway Park, Goodneighbor is a lawless haven for ghouls and drifters, and the Freedom Trail hides the way into the Railroad. Companions bring personality to every trip, from the loyal Dogmeat to the synth detective Nick Valentine and the reporter Piper. Four factions, the Brotherhood of Steel, the Railroad, the Institute and the Minutemen, pull the story toward very different endings, and deciding who to side with carries real weight. For the first time in the series, your character is fully voiced.
Combat is far sharper than in Fallout 3. Gunplay feels like a proper shooter, and V.A.T.S. now slows time rather than freezing it, which keeps fights tense. Power armor becomes something closer to a walking tank, fueled by fusion cores, and you climb into your first suit early on in Concord with a minigun and a Deathclaw to deal with. The other big addition is building. Every desk fan, typewriter and roll of duct tape you scavenge breaks down into components for modding weapons and armor or for raising settlements, complete with walls, power, turrets and settlers to defend.
Inon Zur's score and the old standards on Diamond City Radio set the mood, and the wasteland rewards curiosity at every turn, from the Brotherhood's airship looming over Boston to vaults hiding their own grim experiments. This is the Fallout that turned scavenging into a game of its own, and on PlayStation 4 it is a huge, self-contained adventure you can sink months into without running out of places to explore.
