Few opening moments in modern RPGs hit like the first time the great door of Vault 101 rolls open and you stagger out into the blinding light of the Capital Wasteland. Fallout 3 lets you live your whole childhood underground before that moment, from your birth to your tenth birthday party and a teenage aptitude test, so when your father James, voiced by Liam Neeson, disappears and you follow him outside, the ruins of Washington, D.C. feel enormous, hostile and completely open.

Bethesda Game Studios brought the series it had acquired into first person, and the fusion works beautifully. V.A.T.S. freezes combat so you can spend action points targeting a Super Mutant's legs or a Raider's weapon arm, then watch the slow-motion carnage play out. Your Pip-Boy 3000 tracks quests, perks and radiation, and the karma system responds to everything you do. The town of Megaton is built around an undetonated atomic bomb, and what you choose to do about it is one of the first big decisions the game hands you. Three Dog's Galaxy News Radio keeps you company with 1940s records like The Ink Spots' "I Don't Want to Set the World on Fire", a perfect soundtrack for a world that burned.

The Capital Wasteland is packed with landmarks and stories: the aircraft carrier settlement of Rivet City, the Washington Monument, the Brotherhood of Steel holed up in the Citadel, the Enclave's sinister broadcasts, and the main quest's hunt for Project Purity, which builds toward the towering robot Liberty Prime. Many of the best moments are off the main path, in vaults with dark experiments behind their doors and in side quests that refuse to give easy moral answers. Inon Zur's score sets a lonely, melancholy tone between the radio's cheerful tunes.

Fallout 3 collected a long list of Game of the Year awards and pulled the series from cult PC RPG into one of gaming's biggest franchises. Its five add-ons, Operation Anchorage, The Pitt, Broken Steel, Point Lookout and Mothership Zeta, expanded the world further and were gathered together in the Game of the Year Edition, with Broken Steel letting play continue past the original ending. On PS3 it is the game that started Bethesda's era of Fallout, and walking out of Vault 101 for the first time still feels like the beginning of something huge.
