Item Description
Fire Dragon's Roar should feel like an event, and in Gust's Fairy Tail it does. Developed by the studio behind the Atelier series, with feedback from creator Hiro Mashima, this 2020 RPG picks up after the Tenrou Island arc, when Natsu, Lucy and the missing members come home to find their guild's reputation in tatters. Putting Fairy Tail back on top is the spine of the whole game: take on requests, earn jewels, upgrade the guildhall and climb the lettered guild ranks until tougher jobs and bigger fights open up.
Battles are turn-based but never sleepy. Enemies line up on a three-by-three grid, and every spell has its own reach and area of effect, so each turn becomes a small positioning puzzle: a wide blast for a tight cluster, a focused strike on the caster hiding in the back row, or a move that shoves foes into place for the next teammate. Seven magic types, from Fire and Ice to Holy, Demon, Light and Dark, shape strengths and weaknesses. Chaining attacks fills the Fairy Gauge for Magic Chains and finishers, and characters who soak up enough damage can trigger Awakening for a burst of power, with some changing form entirely. Reviewers singled out the combat as the game's best feature, and it is easy to see why.
The story covers two of the series' fan-favorite stretches. The Grand Magic Games pit Fairy Tail against Fiore's rival guilds in a tournament that spirals into the dragon crisis of the Eclipse Gate, and the Tartaros arc brings in the demon guild and the threat of its Face weapon. Between story beats you can challenge guildmates to one-on-one duels, and Extreme Magic lets the strongest spells wreck the surrounding scenery purely for the spectacle. The cast is voiced by the anime's own actors, which goes a long way when Erza and Gray start trading barbs between missions.
This is a game written for people who already know the guild. It assumes you know why Gajeel and Juvia matter and what Tenrou Island cost everyone, and it moves through the arcs at a brisk clip rather than retelling every chapter. That is exactly the appeal for readers and anime watchers: the tournament battles and the darkest arc of the series turned into a full RPG with real tactical bite, built around a guild you rebuild with your own hands on PlayStation 4.
