Item Description
Five cards hit the table face up, and your opponent has to cut them into two piles knowing you get to pick. That is the whole of Fact or Fiction, and it is one of the most delicious dilemmas Magic has ever printed. Split four and one, and you take the four. Split three and two, and you take whichever pile matters most, often the single card they were desperate to keep away from you. Either way, the blue player walks away with the best of five cards for four mana, at instant speed.
It debuted in Invasion in 2000 and quickly became the signature card-draw spell of that era's blue control decks, cast at the end of an opponent's turn so the mana never went to waste. Commander players love it for the same reasons, plus a bonus: the pile you don't take goes to your graveyard, exactly where flashback, reanimation and delirium decks want their cards. At a multiplayer table you even get to choose which opponent does the splitting, and reading who will split it worst is half the fun.
This is the From the Vault: Twenty printing, collector number 9, a mythic-rarity foil illustrated by Terese Nielsen. From the Vault: Twenty marked Magic's twentieth anniversary in 2013 with twenty foil cards drawn from across the game's first two decades, and Fact or Fiction carries the Invasion era into that lineup with a glossy finish worthy of its reputation.
