Item Description

Pharaoh's army is behind you, the wilderness stretches ahead, and the only weapon Moses carries is the Word of God itself. Exodus: Journey to the Promised Land is one of the most recognizable releases from Wisdom Tree, the Christian game publisher that grew out of Color Dreams and released its cartridges for Nintendo hardware without the company's official license, and this Game Boy version brings its odd, earnest charm to the small screen.

Under the Bible-story framing sits a surprisingly solid action-puzzle game. Exodus is built on Color Dreams' earlier Crystal Mines, which owed a lot to the Boulder Dash school of maze design, and each level asks Moses to navigate a labyrinth and gather what he needs before he can move on. Enemies roam the maze, and Moses fends them off and clears obstacles by firing glowing "W"s, the Word of God, across the screen. Planning a route through each maze while keeping enemies at bay takes real thought, and the pressure builds as tougher foes start turning up.

Bible trivia is woven into the game as well, giving the action a quirky Sunday-school flavor that no licensed Nintendo release of the time would have tried. It is the kind of design you could only find in the strange, independent corners of the Nintendo era.

That is exactly why collectors seek it out. Wisdom Tree's unlicensed carts are a fascinating chapter of video game history, and Exodus is a cornerstone of that story: a faith-based curiosity that also happens to be a perfectly playable puzzle game, and a conversation piece for any shelf of offbeat Game Boy titles.
