Item Description

Kanata's life ends in a mysterious accident in modern Tokyo, and his story starts on another world. He wakes on Protolexa alongside eleven other people from Earth, all of them made immortal and all of them carrying a fragment of the soul of Yamatoga, an evil god who would very much like to be whole again. Between a guardian named Amatsume who can send them home and a faction that wants Yamatoga to rise, the twelve have to decide who to trust and what kind of beings they have become.

Exist Archive comes from tri-Ace, working with Spike Chunsoft, and its combat is the clearest sign of its lineage. Like Valkyrie Profile, it maps up to four party members to the face buttons, so a turn is about timing a chain of attacks across your team rather than choosing from menus. Battles alternate between attack and guard phases, an action bar limits how much each character can do, and overkilling enemies boosts your experience multiplier, while sustained combos raise the drop rate and the quality of the loot. Stockpile enough charge and the Demon's Greed super attacks cut loose.

Between battles you explore Protolexa's dungeons as 2D platforming stages, unlocking abilities such as a double jump and turning visible enemies into crystals you can use to reach new heights. Affection between party members matters too, since close bonds let characters inherit each other's skills and classes, and the story branches toward multiple endings. Motoi Sakuraba, the composer behind Valkyrie Profile and Star Ocean, wrote the score, and Mino Taro handled the character designs. A first playthrough runs roughly 45 to 55 hours, with New Game+ and secret challenges waiting after.

Reviewers found the middle stretch repetitive, with too many reused dungeon backdrops, but praised the battle system and the final chapters. For players who have spent years wishing for another Valkyrie Profile, this is the closest tri-Ace came on a handheld, a long, quirky JRPG with a combat engine that rewards experimentation, and a game that slipped past a lot of Vita owners the first time around.

About the game

The game is set within modern day Tokyo, Japan, alongside a world on another planet, called “Protolexa.” There are a dozen young protagonists, all of whom are evil, soul-collecting gods who have become embroiled in the issues of all gods. The main focus of the game is dungeon crawling. You’ll be able to explore dungeons from a side-view perspective, while the characters are presented in a 3D, chibi-sized style. The characters can use various skills like jumping, dashing, and more to solve puzzles. The enemies are not randomized, they are presented on screen prior to battle.
