Jameson is a veteran soldier with a troubled past, and his latest job goes wrong before it starts. Sent with a team of mercenaries to find the missing heir to the galaxy's most powerful corporation on a remote mining planet, his ship loses power and crashes toward the surface, leaving him alone in a hostile alien world. Exile's End is the story of his fight to survive, escape and uncover what really happened on that planet.
The game draws its inspiration from early 1990s cinematic action-adventures like Flashback and Another World, rather than modern Metroidvanias. Movement is deliberate, every jump and firefight matters, and exploration is about piecing together the layout of a sprawling mining complex while solving puzzles and gathering an arsenal of weapons. It is a challenging, atmospheric game that rewards patience and careful play.
What makes Exile's End especially appealing to retro fans is its pedigree. The core game comes from Australian developer Magnetic Realms, while the pixel art and cutscenes were created by staff who worked on Secret of Mana and other classics, and the soundtrack is by Keiji Yamagishi, the composer behind the NES Ninja Gaiden. The result looks and sounds like a lost 16-bit treasure with a strong sci-fi flavor inspired by the films and anime of the 1980s.
Published by Marvelous, Exile's End is a small, focused game with a big heart, built by people who clearly love the genre it honors. Cinematic platformers of this kind are rare today, and this one pairs that slow-burn, survive-the-next-room tension with a fresh story and music from the composer who scored Ryu Hayabusa's NES adventures.
"Japan's take on classic Commodore 64/Amiga action-adventure games. NOT a Metroidvania. Use your wits and your weapons to discover an ancient secret and gain your redemption. Art and music by Japanese legends of console gaming. Exile's End is an homage to early 90's action-adventure PC games like Flashback and Another World, but with a Japanese flair. The core of the game is from Australian game maker Magnetic Realms with art, cutscenes, and music provided by legends of the 8 and 16-bit eras from Japan. It draws its thematic influence from the science-fiction films and anime of the 80's and its gameplay from classic Amiga and Commodore 64 action-adventures. - Music From Keiji Yamagishi (Ninja Gaiden NES, Tecmo Bowl, Captain Tsubasa) - Art by staff from Secret of Mana,First Kiss Story, Mother 3, and more! - NES-style cutscenes by OPUS (Half-Minute Hero)"
