Item Description

When this cartridge reached the Genesis in the summer of 1992, Evander Holyfield was the undisputed heavyweight champion of the world, and Sega put him exactly where he belonged: at the top of the rankings, waiting for you. Evander Holyfield's Real Deal Boxing is built around that climb. Developed by Acme Interactive, it hands you a boxer of your own making, with his name, build, handedness and look all up to you, and sets you loose on a ladder of fictional contenders standing between you and a title shot.

Between fights, the career mode becomes a light management game. Your boxer's power, speed, stamina and defense rise through training choices that range from free weights and a protein diet to karate lessons and a trip to the health club. Time matters too: fighters begin to fade after a long run of bouts and must hang up the gloves at 40, so every career has a shape and an ending. Take the belt from Holyfield and the game keeps going with challenge matches against the top contenders gunning for you.

In the ring, the presentation was ambitious for its day. Fighters are side-view sprites in front of a 3D-style ring, while a small overhead map tracks both boxers so you can circle, cut off the ring and move in any direction rather than just shuffling back and forth. Reviews were split: Wizard gave it an A-minus for its graphics, realism and customization, while Britain's Mean Machines found the in-game logic frustrating, so expect a sim with personality and a few rough edges.

Today it is a snapshot of a specific moment in the sport, with Holyfield at his peak a few months before his first fight with Riddick Bowe, lending his name to a game that let players build a challenger of their own. The create-a-fighter career and the champion's name on the title make it a fun, very early-nineties piece of Genesis sports history to play and to own.

About the game

The game features Evander Holyfield, and over 28 imaginary fighters. It uses 2D sprites seen from a side-on view, combined with a top-down map of the ring, to allow boxers to move 360 degrees about the ring. The cartridge utilises battery-backed RAM to save a player's progress.
