Item Description
Etrian Odyssey hands you a blank grid and a stylus and trusts you to do the rest. Every step into the labyrinth is yours to chart on the lower screen: you draw the walls, mark the doors and treasure, note the shortcut you found the hard way and the patch of floor that hurt you. Beyond the Myth, the fifth mainline entry, returns to that pure foundation and sends a new guild of adventurers from the town of Iorys up the towering Yggdrasil tree, chasing the legend that whoever reaches its summit will have their greatest wish granted.
Where this entry shines is party building. For the first time you choose from four races, the human Earthlain, the winged Celestrians, the beast-like Therians and the small Brouni, each with its own stat leanings and racial skills. On top of that come ten classes: the Fencer, Dragoon, Cursebearer, Harbinger, Masurao, Warlock, Necromancer, Rover, Shaman and Botanist. Later, each class splits into two Legendary Titles that push it in very different directions, and the character creator lets you adjust colors and voices so your guild feels like your own.
The labyrinth itself is as demanding as ever. Each stratum brings a new look, new monsters and new puzzles, while the dreaded FOEs prowl the halls as visible, powerful threats you have to plan around rather than simply fight. Turn-based battles reward careful row placement and skill combinations, and Yuzo Koshiro's score gives every floor its own mood, from bright forest strolls to grim late-game descents.
As the last numbered Etrian Odyssey released on the 3DS, Beyond the Myth is the series at its most customizable and confident, and a superb pick for classic first-person dungeon crawling on a handheld. It is the kind of game where the map you draw becomes a record of your own adventure, which is about as personal as RPGs get.
