Our grade: Near Mint. Pictured: this printing of the card. Every card ships triple-sleeved — a soft sleeve, a deck sleeve and a rigid top loader.
Item Description
Ethersworn Canonist enforces one simple rule: each player who has already cast a nonartifact spell this turn can't cast another one. For two mana, this 2/2 Human Cleric slams the brakes on decks that win by chaining spell after spell in a single turn, and because artifact spells are exempt, it can sit happily in an artifact deck that keeps casting under its rule.
That makes it a classic hate piece against storm-style combo and a clever tool for artifact-heavy builds. In Commander it can slow down the most explosive tables while barely inconveniencing a deck full of artifacts. The flavor text hints at the unsettling mission of Esper's Ethersworn, who would rather new life be suppressed than left unperfected.
This is the Double Masters printing, collector number 14, illustrated by Izzy, in non-foil. Double Masters, released in 2020, brought back a wide range of well-known Modern-era staples, and Canonist's return gave a new generation of players access to this Shards of Alara classic.
